Patty was my best friend from 1st grade. We walked to school every day, dawdling along the way. Reason we were dawdling… we wanted to walk into mass every school day five minutes late (probably my idea). That is until Sister Mary Winifred stopped us at recess and told us she saw us arriving late and that if we did it again she would pull us out of the pew and make us kneel in the aisle during mass. Needless to say, Patty and I had perfect attendance at daily mass for the rest of our school days.
Patty is the nicest person I’ve ever met and if you knew my many wonderful friends you would know what a complement this is. She is loving and caring and the kind of person who would do anything for her family and friends. I’ve been looking for some photos to post of us together but it seems one or the other of us must have been taking photos of each other as I have very few of us together 🙁
One memory I must share is how we would spend our free days together in those early years. We loved looking through the Sears catalog, page by page, taking turns picking what we wanted on each page. We would do the entire catalog, not just children’s clothes. We loved doing that – wow – simpler times for sure. As we grew older we would walk downtown or to Roger Young Park to swim or go to dances on the tennis courts … we would walk to Speigel Grove, that is home to the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center as well as his residence, that was half way between her house and mine. We would walk all over the “Grove” for hours. We lived in a very middle class neighborhood-kind of exciting to have one of our presidents of the United States live half way between our homes.
I share all this to say I am so sad my best friend Patty has passed away! We didn’t see each other as much as we would have liked after I moved away from Fremont. But we did get together almost every summer for a visit these last several years. I wish she would have lived ten minutes away from me these last several years like she did when we were growing up so I could have shared going to doctor’s appointments with her. It’s good to move around, the world is a big place, the United States has lots of great places to live but it does making see those you love difficult to see as much as you would like.
I love you Patty Lou-always have and always will, my best friend forever!

Sincere condolences to Patty’s family. She was raised by extraordinary people and treated everyone so graciously. I lived on Spruce Street and as a fourteen year old and would ride by bike to her dad’s gas station on State Street. Her mom, dad and brother treated customers like family. It was fun watching Tish break down tires and service cars. I was such a tom boy there. When I married my first husband, Bob Slemmer, Patty and her first husband, Bob Karlovetz, came to our wedding. We all went to a lot of car functions that the local Cam Toter Club put on. Patty would light up a room with that gorgeous smile and always have kind things to say to all she encountered. I feel quite blessed to have known her and her family. Consider yourselves hugged.

Your mom meant the world to me. For as much time I spent at your house growing up through High School Graduation, she treated me like her own daughter. I will NEVER be able to express the gratitude I will always have for her. Your mom was a very special person and will always hold a piece of my heart.
