Vernon “Skip” C. Nitschke, 87, of Fremont, OH passed away on May 5, 2026 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on January 10, 1939 the son of Carl and Velma (Drenning) Nitschke. Vern was a 1958 graduate of Fremont Ross High School. He married Delaine Cummings on June 6, 1959 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Fremont, OH and she preceded him in death on May 20, 2016.
Vern was a long-distance truck driver for Chemi-Trol for thirty-eight years until he retired in 2004. He then drove truck for Spader Freight for several years until he retired in 2010. Vern also served in the National Guard for sixteen years. Vern was a longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, reading, building model trucks and was a history buff. He mostly loved to spend time on his front porch with his wife and spend time with his family.
Vern is survived by his children, Cynthia (Steve) Reed, and Steven Nitschke both of Fremont; sister, Joyce Ryce, California; four grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Delaine Nitschke and sister, Carol Arnold.
There will be a private memorial service at St. John’s Luteran Church at a later date.
Memorials can be made in Vern’s honor to the American Cancer Society or Heartland Hospice.
