Steven “Steve” Charles Ickes, 77, of Fremont, OH passed away on Wednesday, March 25, 2026 surrounded by his family at his home. Steve was born on December 8, 1948 to Norman and Marian (Decker) Ickes in Toledo, OH. Steve married Lori Ickes on November 3, 1978 at Faith Lutheran Church in Fremont and she survives.
Steve served in the United States Army from April 1968 to April 1971 and earned the National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service with Broze Service Stars and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device. Steve worked for Modine Manufacturing in Pemberville, OH for over 26 years until he retired in 2008 when the plant closed. He had several other jobs including the Lime Plant in Woodville and the Postal Service in his younger years.
He enjoyed golfing, fishing, bowling, horse racing, playing cards and mushroom hunting. He was an avid Detroit Lions, Detroit Tigers and Ohio State Buckeyes Fan. In High School Steve played football, baseball and basketball nicknamed “Gunner”. He also enjoyed watching his boys play various sports. Steve loved his family and he loved growing up with his siblings on the farm that was known for food and fun. The family enjoyed their vacation time together, visiting Amish Country, Florida, Michigan and Tennessee.
Steve is survived by his wife of forty-seven years, Lori Ickes; children, Michael Ickes, Justin (Christine Park) Ickes, Christopher Ickes, all of Fremont; grandchildren, Hannah (Fabian) Ickes, Ian Ickes, Hailee Ickes, Andrew Park; great grandchildren, Athena, Kaliha, Rejna, Elliott; sister, Nancy (James) Rickard, Woodville, OH; nieces and nephews, Trisha (Josh) Deshuk, Carl (Lisa) Palmer, Matthew (Connie) Palmer, Jason Palmer, Lindsay (Jordan) Keck; many great nieces and nephews and brother-in-law, Gordon (Ruth) Keck
He is preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Lynn Palmer and Theresa Ickes.
Visitation will take place on Monday, March 30, 2026 from 12-2 p.m. at Wonderly Horvath Hanes Funeral Home and Crematory, 425 E. State St. Fremont, OH 4342.
Funeral Services will follow visitation starting at 2 p.m. at the funeral home, with military honors provided by the Woodville American Legion and the Army Funeral Honors Team. Pastor Chet Conley will be officiating.
A private burial will take place at a later date at Oakwood Cemetery.
Memorials can be made in his honor to the Parkinson’s Association.
