Shirley Jean McCarthy

Shirley (Bartson) McCarthy, 80, of Fremont, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 2, 2026, at her home. She was born on January 25, 1946, the daughter of Eugene and Doris (Streeter) Bartson of Fremont.

Shirley graduated from Fremont St. Joseph Catholic High School in 1964. Soon after high school she married Michael McCarthy of Fremont and became a stay-at-home mom, raising their two kids.

While raising her family, Shirley developed a love for bowling and could often be found at Maple Lanes. She became secretary of one of the many leagues she participated in and enjoyed many years of bowling, including the accomplishment of rolling a 614 series.

Shirley is survived by her two kids, son Shawn (Megan) McCarthy of Arizona and daughter Shannon McCarthy of Fremont; granddaughter Taylor (Kent) Weaver of Fremont; grandsons Tod and Tim (Ashley) McCarthy; granddaughter Caylinn McCarthy; and great-grandsons Zander and Ryan McCarthy, all of Arizona. She is also survived by her brother, Leland (Linda) Bartson, and sister, Marlene Bartson, both of Fremont, as well as several nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Doris Bartson, and her husband Michael McCarthy.

Wonderly Horvath Hanes Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements. At Shirley's request, there will be no formal service. Her family will gather privately at St. Joseph's Cemetery to honor and remember her.

Memorial donations in Shirley's honor may be made to the Sandusky County Humane Society.
