Michael McCarthy, 84, of Fremont, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 9, 2026 at Valley View Health Campus. He was born June 1, 1941, the son of Tim and Alice McCarthy of Fremont. He attended Fremont Ross High School where he participated in Football and Basketball and became a member of the Ross Hall of Fame as a member of the 1957 undefeated Football team. After high school, he attended Bowling Green State University as well as serving in the National Guard. After college, he spent 35 years working for Brush Wellman as a Technical Specialist in their Engineering Department.

Mike was an avid golfer and bowler. He also spent many summers coaching many future Ross and St. Joe athletes in the Elks, Kiwanis, Little League, and Knothole divisions of the Fremont Recreational Department’s summer baseball leagues.

Mike is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley (Bartson); son, Shawn (Megan) of Arizona; daughter, Shannon McCarthy of Fremont; granddaughter, Taylor (Kent) Weaver of Fremont; grandsons, Tod and Tim (Ashley); granddaughter, Caylinn McCarthy, and two great grandsons, Zander and Ryan, all of Arizona; brother-in-law, Leland (Linda) Bartson; sister-in-law, Marlene Bartson, all of Fremont as well as several nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Tim and Alice; his brother, Tom of Florida and sister, Sandi (Grubs) of Fremont.

Wonderly Horvath Hanes Funeral Home and Crematory are assisting the family with arrangements, but at Mike’s request, there will be no services, only a private family gathering at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

The family wishes to extend a thank you to the staff at Valley View Health Campus and Heartland Hospice for their compassionate care and kindness shown to Mike during his stay with them.

Memorial donations in honor of Mike may be made to the Sandusky County Humane Society or Heartland Hospice.
