James Andrew Hiser

James A. Hiser, age 87, of Fremont, Ohio went home to be with the Lord on September 16, 2026. He was born on May 1, 1939, at Fremont Memorial Hospital, to the late Marion F. and H. Marcine (Knauss) Hiser of Fremont, Ohio.

Jim had a generous heart, quick wit, very patient, and a wonderful sense of humor. To see the twinkle in his eyes and his mischievous smile meant it was time to tease and play. He had the qualities of a “southern gentleman” and was well-known for his love of sweets - especially enjoying them at bedtime. He, also, had a passion for Hackney ponies and Derby hats. He will be missed, but the family takes comfort in the fact that he’s with the Lord, he has been made whole, and God has given him a mansion in glory land – Heaven

Throughout the years, Jim was president of the Sandusky Co. Democratic Party, member of the Sandusky Co. Board of Elections, member of the American Hackney Horse Society, and negotiator for the International Longshoreman’s Association (early 90’s to 2001). He enjoyed his family, raising and showing his Hackney ponies, The Ohio State University football team, and church activities. He was a member of The Harvest Baptist Temple in Clyde, OH.

Jim was a 1957 graduate of Rising Sun High School where he participated in varsity football, basketball, was vice-president of the Rising Sun FFA Club, and a member of several other clubs and academic teams. After graduation, Jim began working at the Toledo coal docks as a longshoreman.

In 1961, Jim married Rebecca Miller in Bowling Green, Ohio; and Becky preceded Jim in death in September 2016. Together, they have three adult children: Matthew (Susan) Hiser of Wixom, MI; Katie (Mike) Taylor of Fremont, OH; and Jennifer (Aaron) Spielman of Ferndale, MI. They, also, have six grandchildren: Lindsay and Kristen Hiser, Hailey (Steven) Fitch, Andrew, Allison, and Adam Taylor.

In 1962, Jim was drafted into the Army and served until 1964 at Fort Knox, KY. During this time, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal. After his honorable discharge from the Army, Jim returned to the Toledo coal docks, working for the CSX railroad for a total of 44 years, retiring in 2001.

In 2018, Jim met and married Diane Lynn (Massey) Wright and resided in Clyde, OH. Jim, also, has two step-daughters: Jodi (Jason) Rutledge of Shepherdsville, KY and Christine Wright of Washington DC area. He has two step-grandsons: Chase (Bree) & Ethan Wheatley (both in the Navy), and a step-great grandson: Benjamin Wheatley, of Washington state.

Survivors include all of those listed above and, also, a younger brother, Robert M. Hiser. Those that preceded him in death are: his first wife, Becky (Miller) Hiser, his parents Marion and Marcine Hiser, and a brother, Marion F. Hiser Jr (died at birth).

Friends will be received for visitation at The Harvest Baptist Temple, 1022 S. Main St., Clyde, OH, on Wednesday, September 23, at 10:00 a.m. until the memorial service, officiated by Pastor Allen Holmes, begins at 11:00 a.m. Immediately following the service, a luncheon will be served. A private graveside service will be held later at Riverside Cemetery in Defiance, OH.
