James R. Gassner, 78, of Fremont, OH passed away unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, June 2, 2026. He was born on September 5, 1947 in Fremont, OH to Richard and Emma (Krawetzke) Gassner. Jim was a 1965 graduate of Fremont Ross High School and then went on to receive his associate’s degree in mechanical engineering from Owens Community College.
In 1988, Jim married Judy Friedt in Elmore, OH, and their loving partnership endured through the years. Judy survives him, cherishing the many memories they built together. Jim’s professional career spanned more than forty years, culminating in his role as a stationary engineer at Bunge in Bellevue, OH. His dedication and commitment to his work were widely recognized by those who knew him. A devoted member of the local Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses of Fremont, Jim was baptized sixty-three years ago, demonstrating his lifelong faith and commitment to his Creator. Renowned among family and friends as “the fixer,” Jim had a remarkable talent for tinkering and repairing just about anything. Jim enjoyed steam locomotives, had a deep affection for cats, and was an enthusiastic fan of Star Trek.
Jim is survived by his wife of thirty-eight years, Judy Gassner, Fremont, OH; children, Barbara (Patrick) Ray, Michael Gassner, Ryan Gassner, all of Toledo, OH; grandchildren, Justen Sykes, Samuel Sykes, Lily Ray, Zoe Gassner, Emma Gassner, Tristan “Lyd” Gassner and sister, Diane (Philip) Bork, Fremont, OH.
He is preceded in death by his parents and nephews, Jordan Bork, Ryan and Brandon Riedmaier.
Services will take place on Saturday, June 13, 2026, 1:00 pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 1509 Cedar St, Fremont, OH 43420.
