Clara Marie Schermerhorn

Dr. Clara Marie Schermerhorn, MD, PhD, 65, of Helena, OH passed away on July 25, 2026. She was born on February 1, 1961 in Fort Hood, TX the daughter of John Albert Jackson and Joan Ethel (Mitchell) O’Loughlin. Clara graduated from New Rochelle High School in New York. She then attended Columbia Green Community College in upstate New York and went on to receive her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Clarkston University. She then received her PhD in Molecular Genetics and attained her medical degree at the Medical College of Ohio.

Clara married Bryan Schermerhorn on November 26, 1999 and he survives. She was a Physician specializing in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics for twenty years until she retired due to medical reasons on August 28, 2025. Clara loved living on her farm, animals, traveling and spending time with her children.

Clara is survived by her husband, Bryan Schermerhorn, Lindsey, OH; children, Sergeant Bryanna Marie Schermerhorn of Walter Reed Medical Center, MD and Lance Corporal Bruce Allen Schermerhorn of Camp Lejeune, NC; siblings, Linda Merolle, Poughkeepsie, NY, John (Laurie) Jackson, Jr., Willow Springs, NC and Pam A’Damo, Craryville, NY.

She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, William O’Loughlin.

Visitation will take place on Thursday, August 20, 2026 from 10 to 11 a.m. at Grace Community Church, 900 Smith Rd., Fremont, OH. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at the church. A luncheon will follow at the church.

Memorials can be made in Clara’s honor to Humane Society of Sandusky County, American Cancer Society or Grace Community Church.
