Maurice L. Miller

Maurice La Verne Miller, 97, of Fremont, OH passed away Sunday, May 19, 2013 at the Rutherford House in Fremont. He was born on May 17, 1916 in Clyde, OH to William Tell and Bessie May (Grosjean) Miller. Maurice grew up at Twin Pines Farm on Cole Rd. in Fremont and was a 1934 graduate of Fremont Ross High School. In 1937 he graduated from Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute in Chicago, IL.

Maurice served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as Master Sergeant during WWII where he was a Meteorologist in Texas. He married Marvel M. Doll on November 12, 1947 by Dr. J.R. Walter. Together they lived on the corner of Cole Rd. and Buchanan St. from 1948 to 2010.

Maurice was self-employed in floor covering for over 40 years. He was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, Elder and Church Historian. Maurice served on the Fremont City School Board, Vanguard Vocational School Board and as a charter member of the Terra Technical Community College Board of Trustees. He was a member of Toastmasters International where he was given the Distinguished Toastmaster Award. In local circles, he was affectionately known as Mr. Toastmaster. Maurice played the trombone in the Fremont Ross High School Band, Army Air Corps Band and throughout his life, from age 13 until 90. He wrote his autobiography at age 85 entitled The Many Hats I’ve Worn. After retiring he became an avid pool player.

Maurice is survived by his wife, Marvel Miller, Fremont, OH; daughters, Beth (Dennis) Haslinger, Skyesville, MD, Emily (Jeff) Fisher, Livermore, CA; four grandchildren, four great grandchildren, four step great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Luana Pettys; brothers, Dale, Blake, and Merlin Miller; sisters, Margaret Gillespie and Doris Hiser.

Visitation: Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Wonderly Horvath Hanes Funeral Home and Crematory, 425 E. State St., Fremont, OH.

Service: Thursday, May 23, 2013, 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 120 S. Park Ave. Fremont, OH with Pastor William McConnell officiating.

Burial: Oakwood Cemetery
