Harold “Bugs” G. Frey, 91, of Fremont, OH passed away at his home on Tuesday, January 23, 2018. He was born on March 21, 1926 in Dover, OH, the son of Henry G. and Cleva (Weller) Frey. He was a graduate of Fremont Ross High School, class of 1944 and was the captain of the basketball team.

Bugs served in the U.S. Navy as Cryptographer and Communication Specialist from October 1944 until August 1946 and was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, American Area Ribbon and the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon. He married Elizabeth “Betty” M. Hulka on November 4, 1949 at Hayes United Methodist Church and she survives.

Bugs was a Co-owner with his father, Henry of the Frey Company in Fremont. They manufactured one of the Kewpie Dolls. He was a Plant Manager for O’Bryan Brothers of Chicago, a manufacturer of women’s night and daywear and retired in 1988. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity; a Charter member of the Kiwanis Club in Bedford IA; a member of the VFW, Moose Lodge and Lions Club, all of Clarinda, IA. Bugs loved music (choir), watercolor painting, reading and watching TV, especially DVD movies. He was a snappy dresser, an incredible singer and a great dancer.

Bugs is survived by his loving wife of sixty-eight years, Elizabeth “Betty” M. Frey, Fremont, OH; children, Dr. Lisa Frey, Norman, OK, Chris (DiAnne) Frey, St. Charles, MO, Kevin (Michelle) Frey, Castle Rock, CO; siblings, Neal (Gretchen) Frey, Conneaut, OH, Cleva “Tody” Brown, Monclova, OH and Joan Scott, St. Louis, MO; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Tex Frey

A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Hayes Memorial United Methodist Church, 1441 Fangboner Rd, Fremont, OH, at 1:00 pm, with Pastor Alan Brown officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by the American Legion and VFW.

Kevin, Michelle and Family: what a wonderful life, what a legacy! A life well lived and a lot to be grateful. However, the pain of loosing a dear one is beyond words. May the Lord comfort you and may you find peace and solace in knowing your Dad is in a much better place.

I was so shocked and so sorry to hear of Harold’s passing. He was manager at the factory in Bedford Ia.. where i worked for 25 years.. He was such a special guy and so well liked..After he moved to Ohio, I stayed in touch with him . I always sent him a Christmas card and a Birthday card every year and wrote to him in between times. He helped us put on HeeHaw skits around the country .. I loved to hear him sing ‘Danny Boy’ and ‘Lay Your Head upon my Shoulder ‘ no one could sing those songs like Harold. Kevin worked at the factory also.
