Alison S. Lauer, 75, of Fremont, OH passed away on Monday, April 24, 2023 at Bethesda Care Center. She was born on July 17, 1947 in Bellevue, OH to Henry E. and Delores (Waters) Birkholz. Alison was a 1965 graduate of Bellevue High School. Alison married John Lauer on August 22, 1969 at St. Joseph Catholic Church and he survives. She worked at Terra Community College as a records office Clerk for twenty-five years, retiring in 2011. Alison was a member of St. Joseph Church, St. Joseph Booster Club and the Soroptimist Club. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends including her boat partnerships for thirty-seven years and lunch with all her friends at Terra.
Alison was an amazing woman and an inspiration to all who knew her. In her last twenty-seven years, she went from being diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in 1996, chemo, radiation, bone marrow transplant and then to remission only for the cancer to return as Stage 4/metastasized and even more chemo. In all her twenty-seven years living with cancer, her attitude was positive, strong and focused on doing what it took to enjoy life. She appreciated all the love and support from her husband, John and her family and many friends over the years and said that is what kept her going so she could live a good life. She did just that- her best times were with John (most of the time), her kids and grandkids. Always happy around the grandkids, whether it was all the trips to see the Montpelier grandkids in their school and athletic events or the many trips to see her grandkids in New Orleans and going to dinner with her Fremont grandchildren.
Alison’s happy place was on the Friendship IV with John and their life-long friends, Denny and Linda, Mike and Shari and Bob and Cheryl. So many happy times and cherished memories on that boat. Another big part of Alison’s life was all the road trips to follow her favorite teams: Ohio State, the Indians, the Browns and Cavaliers. She was a big fan as John is much more quiet about it.
Alison lived so many good years thanks to the doctors at University Hospital and Cleveland Clinic-hundreds of trips to Cleveland were so well worth it. Also thank you to Dr. Yuhas who was such a kind and good primary doctor for Alison for so many years. The family is also grateful and appreciative of the wonderful home health care given to Alison during her last weeks at home and her last week at Bethesda Care Center.
Alison is survived by her husband of fifty-three years, John Lauer; children, Erika (Eric) Williams, Monica (Joey) Brigle and Joshua Lauer; grandchildren, Hampton, Eric and Julia Williams, Landon, Lainey and Libbey Brigle, Joshua, Jayson, Jessica and Jordyn Mittower; siblings, Charles Birholz and Kathleen (Nick) Lilli; sisters-in-law, Judi Hughes and JoAnne Colgate; many nieces and nephews; “adopted” daughters, Amber Root, Kourtney Jared, Brandi Carter and Tiffany McClain.
She is preceded in death by her parents ; her mother and father-in-law, Helen and Joe Lauer; brothers-in-law, Joe and Jim Lauer, Pat Colgate and Dan Hughes.
Visitation will take place Sunday, April 30, 2023 from 2 to 6 p.m. at Wonderly Horvath Hanes Funeral Home and Crematory, 425 E. State St., Fremont, OH 43420.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, May 1, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 709 Croghan St. Fremont, OH 43420.
Burial will follow mass at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Memorials can be made in Alison’s honor to the St. Joseph Booster Club.
