Thomas P. Burns

Thomas P. Burns, 77, of Fremont, OH passed away peacefully on Tuesday afternoon, September 30, 2014 at his home. Tom was born on March 25, 1937 to the late Robert H. and Esther M. (Mitchell) Burns.  He was a graduate of St. Joseph High School in 1955 and Tiffin University in 1957. He joined the Army Reserves and was activated in 1961-62 during the Cuba crisis.

Tom was co-owner of Burns Iron & Metal Co. Inc. along with his father and two brothers, retiring in 1997. He also was a co-owner of Home Supply Center Co. Inc. with son, Brian Burns. He was a member of St Joseph Catholic Church. Tom most enjoyed being at the “FARM”, where he spent many hours with his dog, Duke. Tom’s favorite pastime was duck hunting. He traveled to Canada for over forty years hunting diver ducks with his family. Tom was a member of the DeMars Point Hunting & Fishing Club for 39 years.  He was also a member of WR Hunt Club, Rockwell Springs Trout Club, and Knights of Columbus. Tom enjoyed fishing for largemouth bass at the POND, and perch on Lake Erie.  Tom was very proud of receiving his pilot’s licenses in the early 1960’s.

A lifelong resident of Fremont, Tom was married to Barbara A. Leite on May 21, 1960, who preceded him in death on May 31, 2001. He married Margaret A. Koch on May 14, 2005 and she survives.

Tom is survived by his children, Craig (Gail) Burns of Mason, OH, Brian (Denise) Burns and Doug (Chris) Burns, both of Fremont, OH; six grandchildren, Eric Thomas, Jennifer Lynn, Aaron Caleb, Ashley Ann, Nathaniel Thomas and Kimberly Ann; three step children, Kimberly Koch, Erin Koch and Tony Koch; siblings, Ruth A. Hakes, Judith C. Sevitts, and David R. Burns, all of Fremont.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Barbara Burns; sister, Jean M. Forsythe; infant sister, Helen Rose Burns; and brother, Robert W. Burns.

Visitation: Monday, October 6, 2014 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Wonderly Horvath Hanes Funeral Home & Crematory, 425 E. State St., Fremont, OH.

Mass of Christian Burial:  Tuesday, October 7, 2014; 10:30 a.m., St. Joseph Catholic Church, 709 Croghan St., Fremont, OH. Fr. Michael Zacharias will be officiating.
