Charles Herbert Gilbert
Charles Herbert Gilbert, 96, of Green Springs, OH passed away at home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, July 24, 2013. He was born on October 10, 1916 in Bellevue, OH, the son of Jacob O. and Ida C. (Markle) Gilbert. He was a 1934 graduate of Bellevue High School.
Charles married Dorothy E. Gillette on April 3, 1937 and she survives. He worked at Norfolk & Southern Railroad (Nickle Plate, Norfolk & Western) for thirty-six years and retired from the Signal Department in 1977.
Charles was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Green Springs. He loved spending time with his family. Charles enjoyed woodworking, gardening, traveling and camped in every state in the Continental U.S.
Charles is survived by his wife of seventy-six years, Dorothy E. Gilbert, Green Springs, OH; daughters-in-law, Beverly Gilbert, Green Springs, OH and Lorilee Gilbert, Fremont, OH; siblings, Richard Gilbert, Williston, FL, Roy Gilbert, Huron, OH; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; children, Robert E. Gilbert, Carolyn E. Shearn-Hougendobler, Donald E. Gilbert and Charles H. Gilbert, Jr.; two granddaughters; siblings, Irene Dinger, Jennie Kohl, William, Ernest and Walter Gilbert, and John Gottschall.
